Myanmar, long known as Burma, is a buddhist country with architectural wonders such as the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, over 5000 temples in ancient Bagan, and the famous Kuthodaw Pagoda in Mandalay. The River Ayeyarwady, Kipling's Irrawady, is Myanmar's main communications artery. All the centers of the country's 2,500-year-old civilization flourished along its shores.

	Weather: Dry and cool season (75-85F) for Myanmar extends from October to March. The NE Monsoon brings rain from May to October. The highlands are cool and comparatively dry.

	What to Wear: Dress is casual and light cotton clothing is recommended. Do not forget insect repellant, sun-block, sun-hat, and extra film, as many everyday items may be expensive to purchase in Myanmar.

	Language: The national language is Burmese, with many dialects spoken by the various ethnic groups. English is spoken by many of the older generation.

	Culture & Customs: People are charming and very friendly to foreign visitors. When visiting temples, always remove both shoes and socks and leave them at the entrance. When sitting, it is considered disrespectful to point your feet toward another person.

	What to Buy: Popular buys include embroidered wall-hangings, bags and cushion covers. Look for the better quality lacquerware which will be black with engraved patterns.
