Getting Acquainted with Indonesia
With more than 13,000 islands, this archipelago embraces a spectrum of diversity unknown elsewhere. Once heavily influenced by Dutch traders, the original Spice Islands were the source of nutmeg, cloves, and mace in the far-off markets of Europe. Today, Indonesia is known for spectacular volcanic landscapes, colorful underwater worlds, pristine beaches and an extraordinary collection of ethnic groups and festivals.
Weather:
All of the archipelago's islands lie within the tropical zone. Enjoy balmy temperatures year round. In the mountains, the climate is cool and pleasant.

What to Wear:
Dress is informal. Lightweight cottons are most comfortable for outdoor activities. Evening wear, which includes batik, tends to be more formal.

Language:
Bahasa Indonesian is the official language. English is understood in most major towns. Some Dutch and other local dialects are also spoken.

Culture & Customs:
Indonesia's diversity owes much to its long history, spectacular geography and above all to the hundreds of unique cultural and ethnic groups who today call themselves Indonesian.

What to Buy:
On both Java and Sumatra, best buys include a wide selection of handicrafts, antiques, and batik. On Bali, artisans produce wood carvings and paintings that are worth the trip. Gold and silver, fine handicrafts and antiques are available in large quantities.
